How to see ChatGPT traffic in Shopify analytics

Updated

Shopify has no AI traffic channel, so ChatGPT visits are filed as ordinary referrals and never labelled. You can still find them in about five minutes: open the Sessions by referrer report, add the Referrer site and UTM source dimensions, filter for the AI domains, and save the report. This guide walks through it, then covers what the number you get leaves out.

Does Shopify have an AI traffic channel?

No. Shopify's acquisition reports group sessions by referring channel, platform and medium, with examples like Instagram, Google and Facebook and mediums like social, search and email. There is no AI category and no way to define a custom channel, so visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot have to be found by referrer domain or UTM source, one domain at a time.

Find AI referrals in Shopify in six steps

Every label below is the wording in the Shopify admin. The whole thing takes about seven minutes the first time and one click after that.

  1. 01

Open the Sessions by referrer report1 minute

In your Shopify admin go to Analytics, then Reports, and open Sessions by referrer. Set the date range to the last 90 days so a small channel has enough sessions to show up. Out of the box the report groups visits by referring channel, platform and medium, and none of those groups is AI: a visit from ChatGPT is filed as a generic referral.

  2. 02

Add the Referrer site dimension1 minute

In the configuration panel click the plus button in the Dimensions menu, choose Referrer site, and click Apply. The table now shows one row per referring domain. Sort by sessions and look for chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. These rows are your AI referrals.

  3. 03

Add the UTM source dimension too1 minute

Add UTM source from the same Dimensions menu. ChatGPT appends utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it cites, and that tag survives when the referrer does not, which happens on many clicks from the ChatGPT mobile app. Rows with a UTM source of chatgpt.com and an empty or direct referrer are ChatGPT visits the referrer column missed.

  4. 04

Filter and save it as a report2 minutes

Click the plus button in the Filters menu, choose Referrer site, set the operator to one of, and add each AI domain as a value. Apply, then click Save as and name it AI referrals. Do the same with a UTM source filter for chatgpt.com. Two saved reports, and the number is one click away every week.

  5. 05

Check the orders, not just the sessions2 minutes

Open a recent order and read its conversion summary. It lists the session that converted, including where the shopper was referred from and the page they landed on. When the referring site is an AI domain, that is an AI-referred order. Spot-check a week of orders this way before trusting any total, because the session report and the order report do not always agree.

  6. 06

Write the number down and repeat weeklyongoing

Record AI sessions, total sessions and AI-referred orders with the date. The share will be small, often under one percent, and the useful signal is the trend and the mix by engine. A number without last month's number beside it tells you nothing.

The domains to look for, engine by engine

Paste these into the Referrer site filter. The UTM column matters only for ChatGPT today; the other engines mostly rely on the referrer, which is why their counts run low.

EngineReferrer siteUTM sourceWhat to know
ChatGPTchatgpt.com, chat.openai.comchatgpt.comStamps utm_source=chatgpt.com on the links it cites, so the UTM column catches clicks the referrer misses.
Perplexityperplexity.aiperplexity (sometimes)Most visits carry the referrer; a UTM tag appears on some links, not all.
Geminigemini.google.com, bard.google.comnoneReferrer only. Clicks from Google AI Overviews arrive as google.com, indistinguishable from search.
Claudeclaude.ainoneReferrer only.
Copilotcopilot.microsoft.comnoneReferrer only. Some Copilot answers open through bing.com and count as search.

How does ChatGPT traffic show up in Shopify analytics?

As a referral from chatgpt.com or chat.openai.com in the Referrer site dimension, and as chatgpt.com in the UTM source dimension when ChatGPT has tagged the link. Neither row is labelled ChatGPT. Perplexity arrives as perplexity.ai, Gemini as gemini.google.com, Claude as claude.ai and Copilot as copilot.microsoft.com.

Why do some AI visits show as direct?

Because the referrer never reached your store. Clicks from mobile apps, links opened in an in-app browser, links marked noreferrer, and URLs a shopper copied out of an answer and pasted into a new tab all arrive with no referrer and, unless ChatGPT tagged them, no UTM either. Shopify files those as direct. The count you can see is a floor, not the total.

Can I see AI-referred orders, not just sessions?

Per order, yes: each order's conversion summary shows the referring site and landing page of the session that converted. As a total, only by last click. If a shopper found you in ChatGPT on Monday and bought from a Google search on Thursday, Shopify credits Google. First-touch credit, where the AI visit that started the journey gets the order, is not something the reports offer.

Two habits make the number more useful. Credit the AI visit that came first, not the last click, when you can see both in an order's conversion summary. And keep AI sessions and AI orders as separate lines, because a small session count with a high order rate is the common pattern: shoppers who arrive from an answer have usually already decided what they want.

Is Google Analytics any better at this?

A little. GA4 also files AI engines under Referral by default, but it lets you build a custom channel group that matches the AI domains, which Shopify does not. Even there the direct-traffic problem is the same, and GA4 sees only the visits that happen, never the AI answers that named a competitor and sent no one.

What the data says

Three things from primary sources, each dated. Together they explain why the channel is worth counting and why counting it by hand is the only option Shopify offers.

  • 3x year-over-year growth in AI-driven traffic and orders across Shopify merchants in the second quarter of 2026, with AI-referred sessions landing directly on a product page 2.5 times as often as traditional search and 75% of AI-referred orders coming from outside the top 100 merchant categories. • 0 AI channels in Shopify's acquisition reports, which group sessions by referring channel, platform and medium with examples like Instagram, Google and Facebook. The Sessions by referrer report shows whether visitors came directly, from search, or by a referral. Shopify Help Center, Acquisition reports, 2026-09-08
  • is, is not, one of are the filter operators Shopify documents for report filters, with Referrer site available as a dimension and Save as to keep a customized report. What can Shopify's reports never tell you about AI search?

The answer itself. Reports start when a shopper clicks. They cannot show whether ChatGPT recommended you or a competitor, how often, on which questions, or whether the price and stock it quoted were right, because none of that touches your store. That half has to be collected from the engines directly, on a schedule, which is what PositionBird does. A free scan shows the answers for your store today.

PositionBird covers both halves. The scan asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude your shoppers' real buying questions through their official APIs and records whether you are named, who is named instead, and whether the price and stock quoted match your store. The RevenueBird pixel handles the traffic side: it remembers the AI engine a visitor arrived from, by referrer or UTM, and credits any checkout within seven days to it, first touch, without any order or customer access. For the weekly routine around these numbers, see AI search monitoring for ecommerce. Terms are defined on the glossary.
