The visibility stack
GEO vs SEO vs AEO: what they mean and how they stack
Updated
Modern digital visibility has three layers. SEO secures traditional engine rankings, AEO targets direct snippets and voice results, and GEO optimizes your brand to be cited by AI models like ChatGPT and Perplexity. Winning shoppers now means showing up in all three.

What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of earning mentions and citations inside AI-generated answers, rather than ranking links on a results page. The engines being optimized for are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews. The work is mostly off-page: being present and accurate on the review sites, comparison articles and directories those engines retrieve from, plus clear on-page facts (prices, availability, specifications) that a model can quote without guessing.
What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so a search engine or assistant lifts it as the single direct answer to a question, in a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, or a voice result. AEO tactics are on-page: a question as the heading, a one-sentence answer immediately below it, concise lists and tables, and FAQ or HowTo structured data so the answer is easy to extract.
What is AI search visibility?
AI search visibility is how often, and how prominently, AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews name and cite a brand when a buyer asks a question its products could answer. PositionBird expresses it two ways. The AI Visibility Score is PositionBird's 0-100 measure of how often AI engines mention and cite a brand across its tracked buyer-intent prompts, averaged over repeated runs per scan. Share of Voice is the percentage of AI recommendations for a set of prompts that name a given brand rather than its competitors.
How is GEO different from SEO?
GEO differs from SEO in what you are optimizing for: SEO earns a ranked link on a results page, while GEO earns a mention and a citation inside a synthesized answer that usually names only a few brands. In SEO the shopper scans ten links; in GEO the AI names a handful of brands and most shoppers never see anyone else. Success is measured differently too: SEO by rank position and clicks, GEO by mention rate, citation rate and share of voice.
| Layer | Where you appear | What success looks like | Who measures it |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Google & Bing result pages | Ranking positions and organic clicks | PositionBird (Google top-10 tracking) |
| AEO | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants | Being the one answer shown, even without a click | PositionBird (snippet & PAA tracking) |
| GEO | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude & Google AI Overview answers | Being mentioned and cited when AI recommends products | PositionBird |
What the data says
Three findings from primary research, each dated, each with its sample. They point the same way: what AI engines cite is what already ranks and what third parties say about a brand, more than what the brand does on its own pages.
- 87% of ChatGPT search (then SearchGPT) citations were pages in Bing's top organic results for the query; 56% were in Google's, with a median Google rank of 17. About 500 citations across 100 queries. Seer Interactive, 2025-02-06
- 1% → 53.5% median citation rate for brands with no Trustpilot profile versus brands with as few as 1-13 reviews, across 804,491 AI responses, 1,926 brands and 15,783 prompts on four platforms. Almost all of the gain is in going from none to some. Seer Interactive, 2026-05-14
- 0.74 correlation between YouTube mentions of a brand and its AI visibility, the strongest factor measured, with branded web mentions at 0.66-0.71; backlink counts showed only very weak correlations. 75,000 brands. Ahrefs, 2025-12-12
Do you need all three?
Yes, most ecommerce brands need all three, because the crawlable content that ranks in SEO is the same content answer boxes lift (AEO) and AI engines cite (GEO). Strong SEO builds the authoritative content AI models retrieve from, AEO's structured answers are the format generative engines prefer to quote, and GEO's third-party authority work (reviews, digital PR, presence on the sources AI trusts) feeds back into classic rankings.
The difference is where the shopper meets you. In SEO they scan ten links. In AEO they read one answer box. In GEO, the AI names a handful of brands and most shoppers never see anyone else, which is why the newest layer is quickly becoming the one stores can least afford to ignore.
One scan measures all three layers
PositionBird measures the whole stack with one scan. It queries ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude through their official APIs with your customers' real buying questions, sampled more than once, and checks Google's classic results: whether you rank in the organic top ten (SEO), whether you appear in the featured snippet and People Also Ask boxes (AEO), and whether the AI engines name and cite you (GEO). Everything rolls into one visibility score and competitor share of voice. Then it writes fixes that work triple duty: FAQ pages that rank, structured answers that win snippets, and citable content with schema and llms.txt that AI engines can quote. One scan, one fix list, three layers. See how a scan works, or read the measurement methodology.
